An Experience That Shaped Me By Kolawole Victor MatthewThere are certain moments in life that completely change how we see ourselves and the world around us. For me, one of the most defining experiences was going through a period of struggle that at first felt like a breaking point, but ultimately became the foundation for growth. Looking back now, I realize that without this challenge, I might not have developed the strength, patience, and perspective that shape who I am today.

The experience began when I was placed in a situation that demanded more from me than I believed I could give. Whether it was balancing responsibilities, overcoming personal setbacks, or facing unexpected changes, I found myself standing at a crossroads. I could either surrender to fear and self-doubt, or I could push forward, uncertain of what the outcome might be. At the time, the weight of it all made me feel incapable and unprepared.
In those early moments, I struggled. I questioned my worth and wondered why I had been placed in such a position. I remember nights of frustration where giving up seemed like the easier choice. Yet something within me refused to let go. Even though I felt overwhelmed, I decided to face the challenge piece by piece, rather than all at once. That shift in perspective breaking down a mountain into small steps was the beginning of a quiet transformation.
One of the most important lessons I learned during this period was the value of resilience. Resilience is not about never falling down; it is about rising every time you do. Every obstacle tested me, but each one also gave me an opportunity to prove to myself that I was stronger than I thought. Slowly, I started to see progress. Small achievements, which I once overlooked, became evidence of my growth.
Another lesson was patience not just with the process, but with myself. I realized that personal growth does not happen overnight. I had to learn to forgive myself for mistakes and accept that setbacks were part of the journey. This was not easy, because like many people, I wanted immediate results. But with time, I understood that the process of becoming better is just as important as the outcome.
This experience also changed how I viewed success. Before, I believed success was measured only by results winning, achieving, or reaching a certain goal. Now, I understand that true success lies in the effort, discipline, and character we build along the way. Even if I did not reach perfection, the person I became in the process was far more important. That realization gave me a new sense of confidence and peace.
Beyond personal strength, the experience taught me empathy. I saw how struggles can shape people differently, and how easy it is to misjudge someone when we don’t know the battles they are facing. Because of what I went through, I learned to listen more, to encourage others, and to offer kindness even when I don’t fully understand their circumstances. My own pain opened the door for deeper compassion toward others.
As I reflect, I can also see how this experience improved my ability to adapt. Life is unpredictable, and no matter how much we plan, there will always be surprises. At first, I resisted change and wanted everything to stay the same. But as I navigated uncertainty, I discovered that flexibility is a strength. Instead of fearing change, I now see it as an opportunity to learn something new about myself and the world.
Perhaps the most profound outcome of this journey was self-awareness. I began to understand not only my strengths, but also my weaknesses. I learned what environments challenge me, what values I hold most strongly, and what I need in order to thrive. This self-awareness continues to guide me in making better choices and building a life aligned with who I truly am.
Today, when I look back, I no longer see that time as a painful memory, but as a blessing in disguise. It shaped me into a more resilient, patient, empathetic, and self-aware person. I still face challenges, but now I face them with the assurance that I have already overcome difficult moments before and I can do so again. That experience did not just test me; it transformed me into a better version of myself, one who is prepared to embrace the journey of growth with courage and grace.
