Senator representing Kwara North Senatorial District, Sadiq Suleiman Umar, has officially declared his intention to contest for the office of Governor of Kwara State in 2027.
The Thenaijalight Online reports that the declaration, held on Tuesday at the Baseball Park, Adewole, was less of a conventional political rally and more of what the Senator described as a “covenant with the people.”
Addressing a massive gathering of party faithful, stakeholders, and citizens, the lawmaker emphasized that his ambition is driven by a responsibility to protect and expand the foundations laid by the current administration of Governor AbdulRaman AndulRazaq.
Senator Umar’s speech centered on a comprehensive roadmap titled “Sustainable Progress for Kwara’s Shared Prosperity,” where he pledged to move the state beyond subsistence into a modern, technology-driven economy.
His vision includes expanding solar power for rural communities and productive clusters, transforming agriculture into agro-industrial growth through modern inputs and irrigation, strengthening digital education and technical vocational training, achieving universal health insurance, and unlocking Kwara’s cultural heritage as a driver of jobs and investment.
“Foundations are not built to be admired alone; they are built to carry greater structures,” the Senator stated, adding that the next phase of Kwara’s development must be consistent, inclusive, and people-centered.
The event witnessed a remarkable show of unity, as elders and stakeholders from all three senatorial districts endorsed his aspiration.
Speaking earlier, the Kwara South APC Elders Caucus Forum, led by Elder Dr. J.B. Ayeni, pledged strong support for a Kwara North candidate.
“We in Kwara South are in total support of a Kwara Northerner to be the next Governor. We have resolved to work with them,” he said.
APC stalwart Prince Olarewaju Shuaib (SOFAB) described the aspirant as “Sadiq the Eagle,” asserting that he stands out among other contenders and is well-positioned to lead the state.
Former Commissioner Abdulmumin Katibi acknowledged that although Moro LGA initially resisted the Senator in 2019, his performance has since earned him widespread acceptance.
Elder statesman Sen. Ahmed Mohammed described him as a “unifier” and “the best bet” to succeed the current administration, while retired General Bolakale Agbabiaka affirmed that the Senator is “super qualified” and urged stakeholders to rally behind him.
Delivering the vote of thanks, prominent industrialist and philanthropist Dr. Lanre Shittu gave a strong endorsement:
“I have known Senator Sadiq Umar for many years, and I can vouch for him completely. Everything he has said today is the truth.”
The thenaijalight Online notes that the declaration signals growing momentum behind the push for a Kwara North governorship, with Senator Umar’s message of humane and inclusive governance resonating strongly, positioning him as a leading contender under the All Progressive Party (APC).
